Inside the Canon PGI-9 Cartridge: A Photo Teardown
Matt McNamara
This is a photo teardown of the Canon PGI-9 pigment cartridge from the Precision Colors archive. It was originally published by Mike, the company's founder, who took a PGI-9PC Photo Cyan tank apart and photographed what he found inside. The photos appear here in their original order, and the notes printed on some of them are Mike's own.
The cartridge opened to show the ink bladder, which Mike notes has simple straight side walls and appears to be PE.The opened cartridge seen from the end, with the cover lifted and the bladder exposed. The cartridge with its cover raised, seen from the edge that carries the blue pad.The piston that goes in and out.An angled view of the piston plate under the clear bladder film. The opened cartridge from the end, showing how far the bladder stands out from the body. The cartridge with the cover removed. The piston plate and film lifted away from the body, revealing the spring underneath.Another view of the piston plate sitting on its spring above the open cartridge body.Spring fully extended. The aluminum piston and spring beside the cartridge body, with cutouts for the paddle hinges and for the exit holes canopy.Inside the cartridge body. Note the two paddles. An angled view into the open cartridge body.Three ink exit holes.Mike's note: this shows how the paddle will fan back and forth inside the cartridge to promote active mixing.Mike's note: the two paddles wave back and forth when the printer is printing, creating a turbulent fanning effect to keep the pigment ink mixed.Ink exits through these three holes.Mike's note: the three exit holes are covered by a canopy to prevent settlement from dropping directly down. The Canon PGI-9PC Photo Cyan ink tank with its label. The same tank with the blue pad exposed. The blue pad moved aside to show a fine SS mesh screen.Very fine mesh screen.A close-up with the mesh screen partly peeled back.Mike's note: these three larger holes lead directly to the inside of the bladder. The ink distribution channel array.
