How to fit spacer rings on Canon PRO-100 cartridges (CLI-42)

The clear spacer rings in your refill kit sit between the cartridge and the print head and make a tighter seal. Fit them if a refilled cartridge keeps weeping at the print head or prints a blotchy nozzle check.

  • Printers Canon PIXMA PRO-100 and PRO-100S
  • Cartridges CLI-42, all 8 colors

Before you start

  • Most customers never need spacers. Start without them.
  • Give it a few pages first. A little weeping after a refill often settles on its own after printing a number of pages. Fit spacers only if it keeps happening.
  • Fit as many as you need. Spacers can go on every cartridge or only on the ones giving trouble.

What you need

  • Clear spacer rings from your refill kit
  • Tweezers
  • Lint free cloth

Fit the spacer rings

  1. Step 1: Take out the spacers you need

Find the clear spacer rings in your refill kit and take out one for each cartridge you plan to do.

Look closely at a spacer: one side is longer than the other. The longer side goes toward the back of the printer.

  2. Step 2: Bring the print head to the center

Open the printer lid and let the print head move to the center.

TipTurn the printer off once the head is centered so it stays put while you work. If you leave it on, you can usually do 2 or 3 cartridges before the head moves back to its parking spot.

  3. Step 3: Remove the cartridge and dry the seat

Remove the cartridge that is getting a spacer and find the spot where it meets the print head. Take out the neighboring cartridges too if you need room.

Soak up any ink around that spot with a lint free cloth.

  4. Step 4: Place the spacer

Set the spacer on the spot where the cartridge meets the print head, with the short side toward the front of the printer and the long side toward the back.

TipTweezers make the spacer much easier to place.

  5. Step 5: Put the cartridges back and print a nozzle check

Put the cartridges back, close the lid and turn the printer on if you turned it off. Print a nozzle check to confirm every color is printing cleanly.
