How to refill Canon PRO-300 cartridges (PFI-300)

Instructions on how to refill original Canon PFI-300 tanks through the outlet pad, with no modification to the tank. There is no chip resetter for the PRO-300: you disable each chip once when support code 1699 appears, then track your ink with a tally counter and a scale.

Before you start

  • Use original Canon (OEM) PFI-300 tanks only. Do not use non-OEM tanks in this printer. If you buy used tanks, make sure they are in perfect condition.
  • There is no resetter for the PRO-300. After its first refill, each color needs its chip disabled once. After that the printer shows no ink level for that color.
  • Track your prints with a tally counter so you know when to refill.
  • Top off every refilled tank whenever the lid is open. Each opening sends ink to the waste ink pad, so fewer openings wastes less ink.
  • Use a digital scale. A full tank weighs approximately 32.5 grams.
  • Never leave a tank open to dry. A dried out tank is very hard to restore.

What you need

  • Precision Colors PFI-300 ink for each color you are filling
  • Original Canon PFI-300 tanks. A second set is highly recommended
  • Squeezy caps with needles, or a syringe and needle
  • A syringe for removing excess ink
  • Digital scale
  • Tally counter

First-time setup

Set up the Squeezy caps

  1. Step 1: Fit the scabbard and needle to the cap Kits with Squeezy caps

The Squeezy system is three parts: the cap, the needle and the red scabbard (needle cover). Every bottle keeps its own needle, so nothing needs washing between colors.

    1. Slip a red scabbard over the tip of the needle so it seals the needle. On the first install, fit it on and off a few times to break it in so it slides on and seals the tip.
    2. With the scabbard on, place the needle over the cone on the cap and turn it clockwise until it is secure. Check that it is firmly attached.
  2. Step 2: Put the cap on the bottle Kits with Squeezy caps

2 oz bottles: remove the silver seal from the bottle, then screw the cap on securely. Peel the seal off, or cut a small X in the middle and peel outwards.

4 oz and larger bottles: these need the sealing O-ring. Place the O-ring on the mouth of the bottle and screw the cap on tight. Remove the cap and check that the O-ring has been pushed up into it. Then pierce the seal and put the cap back on.

CarefulDo not use a knife to cut around the edge of the seal.

  3. Step 3: Test the seal and the needle Kits with Squeezy caps

    1. With the scabbard on, squeeze the bottle gently. No air should escape.
    2. Take the scabbard off, keep the bottle upright and squeeze gently. You should feel air leaving the needle tip. Do not squeeze so hard that ink comes out.

When you finish a refill session, put the red scabbard back on to seal the bottle. There is no need to wash the caps. Store the bottles upright.

TipNo air from the needle? The tip is blocked by a sliver of scabbard from the break-in. See Troubleshooting for how to clear it.

Get ready to track your ink

  1. Step 4: Set up a tally counter and a scale

There is no chip resetter for the PRO-300. Once a tank has been refilled, the printer no longer shows an ink level for that color, so you track your prints and the weight of each tank instead.

    1. Get a tally counter. Count 1 click for each letter size print, 3 clicks for each 13x19 print and 1 click for every two 5x7 prints.
    2. Start counting from the first tank you refill.
    3. Use 24 clicks as your first refill point. Adjust it up or down to suit how you print and how much ink is left at each refill.
    4. Get a digital scale. A full PFI-300 tank weighs approximately 32.5 grams.

TipKeep a second set of original Canon tanks filled and ready. At the refill point, swap the whole set and refill the removed tanks at your own pace.

Disable the chip

  1. Step 5: Disable the chip the first time you refill each color Once per color

You do this once for each of the 10 colors, right after you put a tank back in the printer following its first refill. No modification to the tank is needed.

    1. Let the printer declare the tank empty, then remove it and refill it using the Every refill steps below.
    2. Put the refilled tank back in the printer and follow the instructions on the screen.
    3. When support code 1699 appears, press and hold the lower round button on the right side of the printer (the one with the red triangle) for 5 seconds.
    4. The printer shows that it is processing, then carries on working.

From now on the printer shows no ink level for that color and does not ask about it again. Refill that tank by your tally count.

TipSupport code 1699 is expected. It does not mean anything is wrong with the tank.

Every refill

Part 1: Remove and weigh

  1. Step 1: Decide which tanks to refill

    • A tank that still has a working chip: refill it when the printer declares it empty.
    • Tanks you have already refilled: refill them when your tally counter reaches your refill point.
    • Every time the lid is open: top off all the tanks you have refilled before, in the same session.

Each time the lid is opened or one tank is changed, the printer uses the same amount of ink and sends it to the waste ink pad. Fewer openings means less wasted ink.

TipA refilled tank can run low before a rarely used original tank is declared empty, for example Matte Black if you hardly use it. That is why you top off every refilled tank each time.

  2. Step 2: Remove and weigh the tanks

    1. Remove the tanks you are refilling from the printer.
    2. Weigh each tank on the digital scale to see how much ink it needs. A full tank weighs approximately 32.5 grams.

Part 2: Fill

  1. Step 3: Dribble ink onto the outlet pad

The tank refills through its ink outlet pad. Ink placed on the pad is drawn back inside the tank. Nothing is drilled or opened.

    1. Tilt the tank.
    2. With the Squeezy bottle, or a syringe and needle, slowly dribble the correct color onto the pad.
    3. If ink starts to collect on top of the pad, slow down.

  2. Step 4: Lay the tank flat and fill to weight

    1. When the tank is nearly full, or the pad gets really wet, lay the tank down horizontally.
    2. Slowly drip ink onto the pad.
    3. Gently squeeze the sides of the tank and release to clear any pockets of air inside.
    4. Stop when the tank weighs approximately 32.5 grams. With a scale, the fill is now complete.

No scale? Keep adding ink until the tank will not absorb any more, then go to the next step.

CarefulDo not use more force than you would use to handle the tank normally.

  3. Step 5: Remove excess ink If you filled without a scale

If you filled until the tank stopped absorbing ink, take the excess back off the pad.

    1. Draw the ink sitting on the pad up into a syringe.
    2. While you do this, gently squeeze the sides of the tank, with the same force you use to handle it.
    3. Stop when the pad looks wet but not overly so.
    4. Return the excess ink to its bottle, then wash the syringe and needle.

TipA pad that is too wet will leak a little when the tank is turned over.

Part 3: Install

  1. Step 6: Put the tanks back and reset the tally counter

    1. Put the tanks back in the printer.
    2. If this is the first refill for a color, the printer shows support code 1699. Hold the lower round button for 5 seconds (see Disable the chip).
    3. Reset the tally counter to zero.

When needed

Cartridge care

  1. Step 1: Service a tank that will not take ink Only when needed

Normally you can refill these tanks many times with no servicing. Service a tank only in these cases:

    • It was refilled with the wrong color and all the ink has to come out.
    • It will not take ink back in, or will not take the full amount. Either the spring mechanism inside is stuck or air has entered the bladder.
    • You do not want the first refill to mix with the original Canon ink still in the tank.

The video shows the servicing method.

TipAlways refill with the method shown in Part 2. It tests that the tank is working properly every time you fill it.

Troubleshooting

Problem

The printer shows support code 1699 after I install a refilled tank

Fix

This is expected the first time each color is refilled. Press and hold the lower round button on the right side of the printer (the one with the red triangle) for 5 seconds. The printer shows that it is processing and then carries on. It happens once for each color.

Problem

The printer no longer shows an ink level for a color

Fix

This is normal once the chip for that color has been disabled. The printer will not warn you about that color again. Track your prints with a tally counter and top off every refilled tank whenever the lid is open.

Problem

Ink pools on the outlet pad and will not go into the tank

Fix
  1. Slow down and give the tank time to draw the ink in.
  2. If it still will not take ink, the spring mechanism inside may be stuck or air may have entered the bladder. Service the tank (see Cartridge care).
  3. If the pad is clogged with dried or hardened ink, we recommend replacing the tank with a new original Canon one.
Problem

The tank drips a little when I turn it over

Fix

The pad is holding too much ink. Draw the excess off the pad with a syringe while gently squeezing the sides of the tank, until the pad looks wet but not overly so. A full tank weighs approximately 32.5 grams.

Problem

Colors look off after my first refills

Fix

Our ICC profiles for the PRO-300 are valid once every tank has been refilled once, and ideally twice. Until then the tanks hold a mix of original Canon ink and our ink. Also let prints dry fully: ink colors and gloss stabilize after drying.

Problem

No air or ink comes out of a Squeezy needle

Fix

The tip is blocked by small slivers of scabbard from the break-in.

  1. Remove the cap and rinse it with water.
  2. Heat the tip of the needle with a lighter for a fraction of a second, then rinse the tip.
  3. Refit the cap and test again.
