How to refill Epson SureColor P600 cartridges (T760)

Instructions on how to prime and install refillable T760 cartridges once, then refill them and reset the auto reset chips. The chip resets only when the printer reports the cartridge as not recognized, so keep every cartridge topped up with ink in between.

Before you start

  • Never let a cartridge run out of ink. If it runs dry, air gets into the tubes that lead to the printhead and is difficult to remove.
  • The chip resets only at empty. When the printer shows a cartridge not recognized warning, remove the cartridge and put it back. Doing this earlier does not reset the chip.
  • Refill immediately when a cartridge shows empty, and top up all the other colors at the same time.
  • Keep more ink in the cartridge than the chip shows. Top up whenever it is convenient.
  • The air vent plug must be out whenever a cartridge is in the printer.

What you need

  • Precision Colors T760 ink for each color you are filling
  • Refillable P600 cartridges with auto reset (ARC) chips
  • Syringe with the priming adapter, for priming empty cartridges
  • Optional: P600 ARC chip resetter, to reset chips at any time

First-time setup

Prepare your cartridges

  1. Step 1: Find the refill plug, the air vent plug and the reservoir

Each refillable cartridge has three parts you need to know before you start.

    • Refill plug: remove it to add ink, and put it back when you finish.
    • Air vent plug: must be removed whenever the cartridge is installed in the printer. It lets air in so ink can flow out.
    • Reservoir: the chamber that feeds the printer. It must contain ink at all times.

Cartridges that arrived already filled with ink (Ready2Go kits) are primed for you. Skip the priming steps and go to "Remove the air vent plug and install".

  2. Step 2: Prime the empty cartridge through the outlet Empty cartridges, once per cartridge

Empty cartridges must be primed before their first use. After that, priming is not needed again at refills.

    1. Attach the adapter to the syringe.
    2. Draw about 8 to 10 ml of ink into the syringe.
    3. Remove the refill plug.
    4. Hold the cartridge upright and push the syringe tip up into the outlet hole on the bottom until it meets some resistance.
    5. Push about 1/8 in further, against the valve inside.
    6. Inject the 8 to 10 ml of ink.
    7. Withdraw the syringe and tip.

CarefulDo not skip priming. A cartridge that is not primed causes heavy banding and poor print quality.

  3. Step 3: Finish filling and replace the refill plug Empty cartridges, once per cartridge

    1. Add ink through the refill hole to finish filling the cartridge.
    2. Push the refill plug back in.
    3. Check the reservoir chamber. On a properly primed cartridge it is at least half full of ink.
  4. Step 4: Remove the air vent plug and install

Remove the air vent plug, then install the cartridge in the printer like a normal cartridge.

CarefulThe air vent hole must be open whenever the cartridge is in the printer.

Every refill

Part 1: Refill and reset the empty cartridge

  1. Step 1: Wait for the "cartridge not recognized" warning

These cartridges use auto reset (ARC) chips. The chip resets itself to full only after the printer has run it down to empty. At that point the printer shows a cartridge not recognized warning for that color.

Removing and reinserting a cartridge before this warning does not reset the chip. The printer and the chip control this, and you cannot force it by hand.

TipThe chip reading and the ink in the cartridge are two separate things. Keep the cartridge topped up so there is always more ink inside than the chip shows.

  2. Step 2: Remove the cartridge and fill it

Refill as soon as the warning appears.

    1. Remove the cartridge that the printer reports as not recognized.
    2. Remove the refill plug.
    3. Fill the cartridge with the correct color.
    4. Push the refill plug back in.
    5. Check that the air vent hole is open.

CarefulNever reset a cartridge without filling it. The printer will then assume there is ink when there is none, and air will be drawn into the ink tubes.

  3. Step 3: Reinsert the cartridge to reset the chip

Put the cartridge back in the printer. Because the printer had run the chip down to empty, removing and reinserting the cartridge resets the chip to full.

The cartridge is now full of ink and the chip reads full, so the ink level shown matches what is really inside.

Part 2: Top up and check

  1. Step 4: Top up the other cartridges

While you are refilling one color, top up all the others too.

    1. Remove the refill plug on each cartridge. The cartridge can stay in the printer.
    2. Add ink until the cartridge is full.
    3. Push the refill plug back in.

Topping up does not reset those chips. Each chip still resets only when the printer reports that cartridge as not recognized. Topping up protects the printer if an ink level estimate is wrong.

TipYou can top up any time it is convenient, including with the printer turned off. Topping up does not trigger a head cleaning on this printer.

  2. Step 5: Print a nozzle check

Print a nozzle check before you go back to printing, to confirm that every color is flowing.

When needed

Cartridge and printer care

  1. Step 1: Reprime a cartridge that ran empty Only when needed

If the reservoir of a cartridge empties completely, the cartridge must be primed again. This is never needed as long as the cartridges are kept topped up.

    1. Prime the cartridge through the outlet with 8 to 10 ml of ink, as in First-time setup.
    2. Finish filling through the refill hole and replace the refill plug.
    3. Reinstall the cartridge with the air vent hole open.
    4. Run head cleanings until the nozzle check is good again. It can take several, because air has to be purged from the ink tubes.
  2. Step 2: Check the black levels before switching between Photo Black and Matte Black Only when needed

Each switch between Photo Black and Matte Black uses ink. Before a switch, the printer checks the chip level of the black it is switching to. If that chip reads too low, the printer refuses the switch. The chip cannot reset until it has been used down to empty, so you can end up stuck.

    • Do not switch away from a black while its chip shows a very low level.
    • Keep your original Epson black cartridges as recovery items. Take them out well before they reach low or empty, and store them.
    • If you get stuck, install a black cartridge with a fuller reading, such as one of those original cartridges.

TipThe optional P600 ARC chip resetter resets a chip to full at any time, which removes this problem.

  3. Step 3: Use the printer at least once a week

Print a document or a nozzle check at least once a week. Regular use keeps the nozzles clear. Printing twice a week also uses less ink overall, because the printer runs fewer maintenance flushes.

Keep switching between Matte Black and Photo Black to a minimum.

Troubleshooting

Problem

I refilled a cartridge but the ink level did not go back to full

Fix

This is normal. Adding ink does not reset the chip. The chip resets only after the printer has run it down to empty and shows the cartridge not recognized warning. At that point, remove the cartridge and put it back in.

Until then, keep the cartridge physically topped up.

Problem

The printer says a cartridge is not recognized

Fix

This is how the printer reports that the chip has reached empty.

  1. Remove the cartridge, fill it, and put it back in. The chip resets to full.
  2. If the warning stays, reseat the cartridge firmly so the chip makes contact.
  3. If a brand new cartridge is never recognized, the chip may be faulty. Contact us.
Problem

Banding or missing colors after installing or refilling a cartridge

Fix
  1. Check that the air vent plug is removed. Ink cannot flow with the vent closed.
  2. Check the reservoir. If it is empty, the cartridge was not primed or it ran dry. Prime it again.
  3. Run head cleanings and nozzle checks. If a cartridge ran dry, it takes several cleanings to clear the air from the ink tubes.
Problem

The printer will not let me switch between Photo Black and Matte Black

Fix

The chip on the black you are switching to reads too low for the printer to allow the switch, even if the cartridge is full of ink.

  1. Install a black cartridge with a fuller chip reading, such as an original Epson cartridge you set aside.
  2. Or reset the chip to full with the optional P600 ARC chip resetter.
