How to refill Epson Stylus Photo R2400 cartridges (T059)

Instructions on how to fill, prime and install refillable T059 cartridges for the Epson Stylus Photo R2400, then refill them and reset their auto reset chips each time the printer reports a cartridge empty.

  • Printers Epson Stylus Photo R2400
  • Cartridges T059 refillable cartridges, all 9 colors
Shop inks and supplies

Before you start

  • Never let a cartridge run completely out of ink. Air gets into the printhead, and the cartridge has to be reprimed.
  • Refill as soon as the printer shows a cartridge low or empty. Top up the other cartridges in the same session.
  • The chip resets only at empty. An auto reset chip goes back to full only after the printer has run it down to empty. Topping up does not reset it.
  • Refill plug in, air vent plug out whenever the cartridge is in the printer.
  • Work over paper towels. Pigment ink stains, and stains on skin can take days to wash off.

What you need

  • Precision Colors T059 ink for each color you are filling
  • Refillable T059 cartridges with auto reset chips (ARC)
  • Syringe and needle
  • ARC chip resetter (optional)
  • Paper towels

First-time setup

Get the cartridges ready

  1. Step 1: Find the three plugs on each cartridge

Each refillable cartridge has three plugs. Learn which is which before you add ink.

    • Refill plug (top): remove it to add ink, then put it back. It must stay in whenever the cartridge is in the printer.
    • Air vent plug (top): must be removed for the cartridge to work in the printer. Keep it in whenever the cartridge is out of the printer.
    • Priming plug (underside): only removed to prime the cartridge.

CarefulThe cartridges are sealed with thin plastic skins behind the plastic shell. Do not scratch or damage them.

  2. Step 2: Fill each empty cartridge Empty cartridges only

New unfilled cartridges must be filled and primed before they go in the printer.

    1. Remove the refill plug.
    2. Fill the cartridge with the correct color using the syringe and needle.
    3. Put the refill plug back.
    4. Remove the air vent plug.

The small round chamber in the middle of the cartridge is still empty at this point. Priming, in the next step, fills it with ink.

CarefulInk can spill and stain. Work carefully, over paper towels, somewhere a spill will not matter.

  3. Step 3: Prime the cartridge Empty cartridges only

    1. Remove the priming plug on the underside.
    2. Insert the syringe (no needle) so its tip seals the priming hole. Hold it tightly in place.
    3. Hold the cartridge upright and pull the syringe plunger out smoothly until the round chamber fills with ink. Draw out as much ink as it takes.
    4. Carefully turn the cartridge upside down, remove the syringe and put the priming plug back.
    5. Top up the cartridge through the refill hole, then put the refill plug back.

Install the cartridges

  1. Step 4: Install the full set of cartridges

    1. Before you install, print a nozzle check to make sure the nozzles are clear.
    2. Remove the air vent plug from each cartridge. Leave the refill plug in.
    3. Install every cartridge. Double check that each color goes in its matching slot.

The complete set of cartridges must be installed for the printer to recognize the chips.

  2. Step 5: Print a nozzle check

Print a manual nozzle check. If the pattern has gaps, run a head cleaning and check again.

    • Run no more than three head cleanings in a row.
    • If the pattern is still not good, let the printer rest for 6 to 12 hours and try again.

CarefulDo not use the automatic nozzle check. Use the manual nozzle check only.

Every refill

Part 1: Reset the chips

  1. Step 1: Let the chip reset itself when the printer says empty

The cartridges carry auto reset chips (ARC). A chip resets itself to full only after the printer has run it down to empty. It cannot reset before the printer reports that cartridge as empty.

    1. Keep printing until the printer reports the cartridge as empty.
    2. Press the ink (change cartridge) button so the printhead moves out to the cartridge change position.
    3. Remove the empty cartridge.
    4. Refill it right away (Part 2), then put it back. The chip now reads full.

Removing and reinserting a cartridge before the printer reports it empty does not reset the chip. Topping up with ink does not reset it either.

TipWhen one cartridge reads empty, top up all the other cartridges in the same session.

  2. Step 2: Or reset every chip with the ARC resetter With the optional ARC resetter

The ARC resetter resets a chip to full at any time, so you can refill and reset all the cartridges in one session. Reset before you fill, to keep ink away from the resetter.

    1. Hold the cartridge so its chip sits against the pins on the resetter, using the alignment guide.
    2. The LED flashes red, then turns green. Green means the chip is reset to full.
    3. If the light stays red, check the alignment of the contacts and try again.

TipEach time a single cartridge resets, the printer runs a head cleaning. Resetting the whole set at once means one cleaning instead of several, which wastes less ink and fills the waste ink pad more slowly.

Part 2: Fill

  1. Step 3: Put the air vent plug in and take the refill plug out

    1. Put the air vent plug back in.
    2. Remove the refill plug.

You can refill with the cartridge out of the printer or still in it. Refilling in the printer extends the life of the cartridge seals and lowers the chance of air getting into the printhead. Keep a paper towel handy for spills and overflows.

  2. Step 4: Fill the cartridge slowly

    1. Fit the needle to the syringe and draw about 11 to 12 ml of the correct color.
    2. Place the needle just inside the refill hole. It does not need to go in full length.
    3. Inject the ink slowly until the cartridge is full. Slow down as you get near the top.

CarefulKeep the needle away from the thin plastic skins inside the cartridge. Do not scratch or damage them.

  3. Step 5: Put the refill plug back and take the air vent plug out

    1. Push the refill plug back in. It must be in at all times while the cartridge is in the printer.
    2. Remove the air vent plug before the cartridge goes back to work in the printer.
    3. Wipe up any ink with a paper towel.

Part 3: Install and check

  1. Step 6: Reinstall and print a nozzle check

    1. Put each cartridge back in its matching color slot.
    2. Print a manual nozzle check.
    3. If the pattern has gaps, run up to three head cleanings in a row. If it is still not good, let the printer rest for 6 to 12 hours and try again.

When needed

Cartridge care and black ink changes

  1. Step 1: Reprime a cartridge that ran completely out of ink Only when needed

If a cartridge ever runs completely out of ink, reprime it. Do not try to fix it with a series of head cleanings.

    1. Remove the refill plug, fill the cartridge and put the refill plug back.
    2. Remove the air vent plug.
    3. Remove the priming plug on the underside and seal the syringe tip (no needle) in the priming hole.
    4. Hold the cartridge upright and pull the plunger out smoothly until the round chamber fills with ink.
    5. Turn the cartridge upside down, remove the syringe and put the priming plug back.
    6. Top up through the refill hole and put the refill plug back.
  2. Step 2: Switch between Matte Black and Photo Black Only when needed

When you swap Matte Black for Photo Black, or the other way around, the printer flushes ink and first checks that the incoming cartridge has enough ink for the switch. It goes by what the chip says, not by the ink actually in the cartridge.

    1. Before you swap, check the ink monitor. The chip of the incoming black should read at least half full.
    2. Put the air vent plug in the black cartridge you take out before you store it.

CarefulIf the incoming cartridge's chip reads too low, the printer rejects it.

  3. Step 3: Store a cartridge out of the printer Only when needed

Whenever a cartridge is out of the printer, keep the air vent plug inserted until you install it again. Keep the refill plug in as well.

CarefulA cartridge laid on its side without the air vent plug can leak ink.

Troubleshooting

Problem

I removed and reinserted the cartridge but the ink level did not reset

Fix

The auto reset chip only resets after the printer has run it down to empty. Removing and reinserting the cartridge before that does nothing, and adding ink does not reset it either.

  • Keep printing until the printer reports that cartridge as empty, then remove it, refill it and put it back.
  • Or use the ARC resetter, which resets a chip to full at any time.
Problem

Gaps or missing colors in the nozzle check after installing or refilling

Fix

This is usually air in the printhead, not a clog.

  1. Run a head cleaning and print a manual nozzle check. Do this no more than three times in a row.
  2. If the pattern is still not good, let the printer rest for 6 to 12 hours and try again.
  3. If the cartridge ran completely out of ink, reprime it (see When needed) instead of running more cleanings.
Problem

The printer does not recognize the cartridges

Fix

The complete set of cartridges must be installed before the printer will recognize the chips. Check that every slot is filled, that each color is in its matching slot and that each cartridge is pushed firmly into place.

Problem

The printer rejects the Matte Black or Photo Black cartridge when I switch blacks

Fix

The chip on the incoming black reads too low for the ink flush that a black switch needs. The amount of ink actually in the cartridge does not matter, only the chip reading. The chip should read at least half full before a switch. The ARC resetter can set it back to full.

Problem

The ARC resetter light stays red

Fix

The chip is not lined up with the pins. Reseat the cartridge against the resetter using the alignment guide and try again. The light flashes red and then turns green when the chip is reset.

Problem

Ink leaks from a cartridge that is out of the printer

Fix

The air vent plug is missing. Put the air vent plug back in whenever a cartridge is out of the printer, and do not lay an unplugged cartridge on its side. Remove the plug again just before you install the cartridge.
