How to refill Epson Stylus Photo R3000 cartridges (T157)

Instructions on how to prime your refillable T157 cartridges once, keep them topped up, and reset the auto reset chips. The chip resets only when the printer reports the cartridge empty: remove it, refill it and put it back.

  • Printers Epson Stylus Photo R3000
  • Cartridges T157, all 9 colors

Before you start

  • Never let a cartridge run out of ink. The printhead is fed through ink lines. If a cartridge runs dry, air gets into the lines and it takes many head cleanings to clear.
  • The air vent must be open in the printer. Remove the air vent plug before you install a cartridge.
  • The chip resets only at empty. It resets when the printer shows the cartridge not recognized warning and you remove and reinsert the cartridge. Not before.
  • Refill every color in one session. It means fewer interruptions and a longer life for the waste ink pad.
  • Use the printer's own power button. Do not switch the printer on and off with a power bar.

What you need

  • Precision Colors ink for the R3000 for each color you are filling
  • Refillable T157 cartridges with chips
  • Syringe with the priming adapter
  • Two objects to prop the cartridges upright

First-time setup

Get to know the cartridges

  1. Step 1: Find the refill plug and the air vent plug

Each refillable cartridge has two openings. Learn which is which before you handle any ink.

    • Refill plug: remove it to add ink, then put it back.
    • Air vent plug: it must be removed whenever the cartridge is in the printer. The open vent lets air in as the ink flows out.
    • Reservoir: the chamber that feeds the printer. It must contain ink at all times.

Plug styles are interchangeable, so go by the position of each plug, not its color. Keep each plug in its original position.

TipThe cartridges will not stand on their own. Prop them upright between two objects, like bookends, while you work.

Prime new cartridges

  1. Step 2: Inject ink through the outlet New or empty cartridges

An empty cartridge must be primed before it goes in the printer.

    1. Attach the adapter to the syringe.
    2. Draw about 8 to 10 ml of ink into the syringe.
    3. Remove the refill plug.
    4. Hold the cartridge upright and insert the syringe tip up into the ink outlet hole until it meets some resistance.
    5. Push the tip about 1/8 in further in, against the valve.
    6. Inject the 8 to 10 ml of ink.
    7. Withdraw the syringe and tip.

TipCartridges that arrived already filled with ink do not need priming. Remove the air vent plug and install them.

CarefulDo not skip priming. A cartridge that is not properly primed causes heavy banding and poor print quality.

  2. Step 3: Finish filling and replace the refill plug New or empty cartridges

    1. Finish filling the cartridge through the normal refill hole.
    2. Check the reservoir chamber. On a properly primed cartridge it is at least half full of ink.
    3. Push the refill plug back in.
  3. Step 4: Remove the air vent plug and install

Remove the air vent plug, then install the cartridge in the printer. The air vent must be open the whole time the cartridge is in the printer so ink can flow.

Every refill

Part 1: Top up before the ink runs out

  1. Step 1: Check the ink when the level shows low

Do not wait for a cartridge to run out. When the ink level monitor shows any one color about 75 to 80 percent used, look at the ink in the cartridges and plan to refill.

Refill all the colors in the same session, not only the low one. You will have fewer interruptions later, and it extends the life of the waste ink pad.

CarefulNever let a cartridge run out of ink. If you print with an empty cartridge, air gets into the ink lines and it takes many head cleanings to clear.

  2. Step 2: Refill through the refill plug

    1. Take the cartridge out of the printer and prop it upright.
    2. Remove the refill plug.
    3. Add ink of the correct color until the cartridge is full.
    4. Push the refill plug back in.
  3. Step 3: Reinstall with the air vent open

Check that the air vent is open, then put the cartridge back in the printer.

TipTopping up does not change the ink level the printer shows. That is fine: it is better to have more ink in the cartridge than the chip shows.

Part 2: Reset the chip

  1. Step 4: Reset the chip when the printer reports the cartridge empty

These cartridges use auto reset chips. A chip resets to full only after the printer has counted it down to empty. At that point the printer shows a cartridge not recognized warning.

    1. Wait for the cartridge not recognized warning for that color.
    2. Remove the cartridge from the printer.
    3. Refill it so the cartridge is physically full of ink.
    4. Put the cartridge back in. The chip now reads full.

Removing and reinserting a cartridge before the warning does not reset the chip. Topping up does not reset it either.

CarefulAlways fill the cartridge when its chip resets. If the chip reads full but the cartridge is not, the printer will keep printing after the ink is gone.

When needed

Printer and cartridge care

  1. Step 1: Prime the cartridge again if its reservoir runs empty Only when needed

As long as a cartridge is never emptied completely, its reservoir keeps an ink level and no priming is needed. If the reservoir does run empty, prime the cartridge again using the steps in Prime new cartridges, then run head cleanings until the nozzle check is complete.

  2. Step 2: Switch between Photo Black and Matte Black with care Only when needed

Each switch between Photo Black and Matte Black uses ink. Before switching, the printer checks the chip level of the black it is switching to and refuses if that level is too low.

    • Do not switch away from a black while its chip shows a very low level. You may not be able to switch back.
    • Keep your original Epson black cartridges as a backup. Take them out well before they are low or empty and store them.
    • Switch blacks as seldom as you can. It prolongs the life of the printer's switching valve.
  3. Step 3: Use the printer at least once a week

Print a document or a nozzle check at least once a week. Regular use keeps the nozzles clear, and printing twice a week uses less ink overall because the printer does fewer maintenance flushes.

Always turn the printer on and off with its own power button, not with a power bar. The printer runs built-in routines when it powers on and off.

Troubleshooting

Problem

The printer says a cartridge is not recognized

Fix

Most often this is the normal empty signal: the printer has counted that chip down to empty.

  1. Remove the cartridge, refill it and put it back. The chip resets to full.
  2. If it happened right after a maintenance cycle or a switch between Photo Black and Matte Black, the cause is the same: a nearly empty chip was run down to empty.
  3. If a brand new chip has never been recognized, the chip is faulty. Contact us.
Problem

I refilled the cartridge but the ink level did not go back to full

Fix

This is normal. The chip resets only when the printer has run it down to empty and shows the cartridge not recognized warning. Remove and reinsert the cartridge at that point. Until then, keep the cartridge topped up and ignore the level shown.

Problem

Banding or missing nozzles after a cartridge ran empty

Fix

Air has entered the ink lines between the cartridge and the printhead.

  1. Prime and refill the cartridge (see Prime new cartridges).
  2. Check that the air vent is open.
  3. Run head cleanings until the nozzle check is complete. It can take several.
Problem

The printer will not switch between Photo Black and Matte Black

Fix

The chip on the black you are switching to reads too low for the printer to allow the switch. Install a black cartridge with a fuller reading, such as an original Epson cartridge you kept in reserve. To avoid this, do not switch away from a black while its chip shows a very low level.

Problem

Heavy banding right after installing a refillable cartridge

Fix
  1. Check that the air vent plug has been removed. Ink cannot flow with the vent closed.
  2. Check that the reservoir chamber is at least half full of ink. If it is not, prime the cartridge again.
